Prices listed are for black and white 8x10 silver gelatin prints, hand-made by Rick. Prices for color images may vary. They are reserved for special promotions, may be inkjet or photochemical prints and may be unmounted or mounted with presentation board rather than cotton rag. Print sizes are based on paper size required for print, not final trim size. Overmat sizes may vary slightly to accommodate trimmed print proportions, and will be indicated upon order confirmation. (To accommodate ease of framing, all overmats will be cut to even-inch dimensions.) Portfolios are often issued in editions of substantially less than 100; and are not covered by the schedule above. Prices for full portfolios and individual photographs from a portfolio are determined at announcement of publication, and will be noted below any such image published on the web site. A gelatin silver print is a black and white print made from a negative onto a base material - fiber-based or plastic paper - coated with a gelatin in which microscopic silver particles have been suspended. (Galleries and museums usually demand prints be made on fiber-based paper.) It is the most common process for traditional black and white printing. All of Rick's black and white prints are made on double-weight fiber-based paper and processed to archival standards. Estimated life span* for this process may exceed 300-500 years. A Fuji Crystal Archive color print is created from a digital file - a high-resolution drum scan of the original tranparency. This process allows Rick to work in the "digital darkroom," fine tuning the print as he would under the enlarger with a silver print. Rather than a traditional projection enlarger, however, the Crystal Archive material is exposed by a Lightjet 5000 or Chromega printer. It looks like a large inkjet printer, but - instead of ink - it "sprays" three colors of laser or LCD light on the light-sensitive paper. The print is then processed in traditional color chemistry, and results in a print with incredible richness and detail, and a Wilhelm rating of more than 70 years, a significant improvement over traditional color materials. Inkjet prints are improving all the time, but the photochemical process currently continues to produce a superior black, an essential quality for a print with a sense of depth. All prints are mounted on, and over-matted with, 4-ply acid-free 100% cotton rag museum board. Frames are available; call for pricing and shipment. * Life span estimates are based on accelerated aging tests performed by Wilhelm Research, the leader in accelerated aging testing of print materials. |
