Do what you love, love what you do

Don't let boredom rule your life. Your time is limited. Your time is precision. Don't waste it living someone else's life. When you do what you love, it shows. You can't wait to wake up and go to work. You don't dread Mondays, but love them because you can begin a new day doing what you love. If, for some reason, you hate your job and whatever you are doing, get rid of it. Find your passion and follow it.

My best tips on how to photograph basketball events

Shooting sports events is not easy. Far from it. However, if you know a few of the tricks of the trade your photographs will look much better and sell much easier. No parent will buy this one for example:

First things first:

Set your camera in continuous mode

This will save you from having to press the button for each and every shot. Set the camera focus to AI

Shoot in JPEG

Yeah, I know all professional photographers shoot in RAW mode. However, trust me and change your camera settigs. At the basketball game you will need the maximum speed you can get from your camera. Parents of the young basketball stars won’t focus too much on the nitty gritty details, but will definitely prefer if you capture the right moment. Plus you won’t have to wait for ages for the RAW files to download mid-play.

Set your lens correctly

And that is to Image stabilizer mode 2. The first mode in only for still subject and the second – for sports events

Note where the sun is when shooting

It is a basic rule, but I am amazed at how many photographers break it. Just aim to stand with the sun to your back. Shooting outdoors is a bit tricky, and at sports events you can’t get to choose the golden hour. Work your cards the best way you can.

Make sure to photograph everyone

If you want to maximize your profits of course. At every play there will be first line players and players who prefer to keep quiet and stay away from the cameras. Remember, it is YOUR job as photographer to capture everyone (preferably with their best moments)

Don’t shoot in the back!

Pun intended. Just make sure you include the eyes of the players in the photos.

Don’t forget to shoot the basketball

Same as the above. It is extremely important to include the basketball in the shot. Including both the eyes of the player and the basketball will make your images an absolute hit. You will get bonus points if you are able to capture a good expression on the player’s face in the shot. Yeah, I know that it is tricky to capture a great shot with the outdoor basketball in it, but do your best and your bank account will thank you!

Make yourself instantly recognizable as official photographer

Wear a T-shirt with a sign or even better – a neon vest saying ‘Request a shot now’. The  more people ask for images of their child, the more money you will make from that event.
